BREAKING: High-quality, international-standard avalanche bulletins are now available for the Central Hokkaido region, courtesy of the Japan Avalanche Network (JAN). Covering the northwest-facing side of the Daisetsuzan National Park (Tokachi Range and Daisetsuzan Mountains) and the northern end of the Yubari Range (Furano Resort area and Ashibetsu-dake), this is a long-awaited and very welcome addition to avalanche forecasting in Hokkaido.

As if just in time for Christmas, the Japan Avalanche Network (JAN) has started a three-times-weekly avalanche bulletin for Central Hokkaido, in northern Japan. We’ve been told this season is a ‘proof of concept’ of sorts, with bulletins scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. For the 2025/2026 season, the bulletins will run during January and February. The local professional avalanche forecasters working on the bulletins this season are generously doing the work voluntarily this season, with the hope that funding will be forthcoming for subsequent seasons.

With burgeoning backcountry access in the high alpine zones of the Daisetsuzan National Park, as well as the more popular zones at the northern end of the Yubari Range, a professional recreational avalanche forecast has been sorely needed. This forecast will fill that need.

This new Central Hokkaido avalanche bulletin joins JAN’s existing SW Hokkaido forecast (covering Niseko, Yotei, and other southwest Hokkaido areas), bringing the number of recreational avalanche bulletins in Hokkaido to two.

Details about all the JAN avalanche forecasting areas, here.

The public can also submit observations, here.

About Filters

REGION: The general mountain/geographical region the route is in.

BEST MONTH(S): Time of year a route is suited to visiting. Some pop all season, some are more limited.

DIFFICULTY: How strenuous a route is, and how technical it is. Full details here.

FREERIDE/SKITOUR: Very subjective, but is a route more-of-a-walk-than-a-ski or the other way around? Some routes are all about the screaming downhill (freeride), some are more about the hunt for a peak or nice forest (ski-tour). Some are in between.

MAIN ASPECT: Which cardinal direction the primary consequential slope is facing, that you might encounter on the route. More details here.

ROUTE TAGS: An eclectic picking of other categories that routes might belong to.

SEARCH BY LOCATION: You can find routes near your current location – just click on the crosshairs (). You may need to give permission to HokkaidoWilds.org to know your GPS location (don’t worry, we won’t track you). Or, type in a destination, such as Niseko or Sapporo or Asahikawa etc.
