The Hisagonuma Refuge Hut is located next to the Hisagonuma lake (ヒサゴ沼) to the east of the main ridge of Kaun-dake, in the central Daisetsuzan Range (location).
The Hisagonuma Refuge Hut, refurbished in 2019, is a small, basic two-story wooden hut with a camping area. The campground can be boggy. Officially, the hut is strictly for emergency overnight stays only (as per the official webpage). Therefore, if choosing to stay next to the lake, ideally you’ll have a tent, and stay at the campsite nearby.

It is not possible to book ahead for this hut. Note that during the peak Daisetsuzan hiking period (August), the hut can be full, so carrying a tent is recommended.
There is no charge to stay or camp.
Heating: There is no stove or other heating source in the hut.
Water: There is a water source behind the hut. However, in September this water source dries up and it is necessary to walk around the lake for about 20 minutes to fill up from the stream that feeds the lake. Boil or filter all water. It is not recommended to consume water from the lake, even when boiled or treated.
Kitchen/cooking: There is no dedicated kitchen or cooking area.
Bedding: There is no bedding provided. Bring your own sleeping bag and mat to sleep on the raised wooden platforms.
Elecricity: No.
Toilets: There is an outhouse toilet – pack out used toilet paper if possible.
Cell reception: There is no mobile reception.
No.

NOTE: For number references to official printed topographical maps, check the main route report ( Central Daisetsuzan Circuit Hike ).
While this hut is funded and managed by the Tokachi Development Bureau, the day to day maintenance of the hut relies heavily on volunteer labor. If you make a visit, please give the place a clean, and make sure to sign the guest book. Always leave a hut cleaner than you found it.
