The Kinoshita Hut, a log hut built in 1986, is conveniently located at the Rausu-dake trailhead on the Utoro side of the Shiretoko Peninsula. It is a simple hut with no food or bedding provided. The hut has an onsen that guests can use individually, although it’s essentially a wild onsen with no established place to use soap. You can rent bear spray and bear bells from the hut and buy several Shiretoko souvenirs, including bandanas picturing various wildflowers found in the region. The hut is open from mid-June till the end of September – it is not available for use in winter.
Booking must be done by phone (in Japanese only).
2500yen per night per person.
Heating: The hut is heated with a wood stove.
Water: There is running water at the hut.
Kitchen/cooking: Hikers need to bring their own cooking equipment and utensils.
Bedding: No bedding provided.
Elecricity: There is no electricity at the hut.
Toilets: There are toilets outside the hut.
Cell reception: There is no cell reception at the hut.
There is a hut-keeper present at the hut throughout the season.
The hut keeper will give detailed (and close) instructions on how to use the hut, but of course, always leave the hut cleaner than you found it.
