遭難者4人は、8月19日から22日(予備日23、24日)の予定でピパイロ川八ノ沢出合いから入渓し、ピパイロ岳北面直登沢を登る計画でいたが、ピパイロ川が増水していたため、途中から尾根伝いにやぶ漕ぎをしながら登っていたが、8月22日午後2時頃、ピパイロ岳北東斜面(標高1880メートル付近)において、20代女性の遭難者が低体温症で行動不能となり、同日午後2時10分頃、警察に通報し、救助要請 (※翌8月23日、道警山岳遭難救助隊が遭難者パーティーを発見、道警ヘリで救助)
