遭難者は、幼児(3歳)と2人で午前9時頃、中ノ沢コース登山口から入山、同日午前11時頃に砥石山山頂に到着、同日午前11時30分頃から男児を背負い下山を開始したが、同日午後0時頃、登山コース上にある通称「三角山(標高705メートル)」の直下を下山中、木の根につまずき転倒し、左肩を負傷、その後、T 4分岐から約250メートル先まで進んだが、肩の痛みが激しく、同日午後1時15分頃、110番通報し、救助要請 (※消防救助隊が遭難者を救助)
