遭難者(親子)2人は、ニセコグランヒラフスキー場に訪れ、スキーをしていたが、午前10時50分頃、地理不案内のため他のスキーヤーの後をついて行き、5番 ゲートからスキー場コース管理区域外に出てしまい、その後、遭難者(女児)が転倒した際にスキー板を紛失して深雪のためその場から動けなくなり、同日午前11時10分頃、同所を通りかかったスキーヤーに救助要請。 (※スキーパトロール隊が遭難者2人を発見救助)
