遭難者は、9人パーティーで午前8時頃、野塚トンネル付近駐車帯から野塚岳に向けてスノーシューを履いて入山、同日午前10時30分頃、野塚岳の標高1,200 メートル付近の稜線上を登山中、トレッキングポールを斜面下に落としたため、同ポールを拾おうとしたところ、急傾斜の硬雪斜面を約10メートル滑落し、立木に衝突して顔面、胸部、腹部、右足を負傷、同日午前11時頃、同行者が119番通報し、救助要請 (※防災ヘリが遭難者を救助)
