The person in distress entered the mountain from the Hirao course of Mt. Yotei with crampons at around 3:30 a.m. and arrived at the summit of Mt. 遭難者は、8人パーティーで午前3時30分頃、羊蹄山の比羅夫コースからアイゼン歩行で入山し、同日午前9時10分頃に羊蹄山山頂に到着、その後、遭難者が8人パーティーの最後尾で下山を開始したが、同日午前11時10分頃、標高1100メートル付近の雪面が硬く凍った急斜面傾斜を下山中、左足に装着していたアイゼンが外れたため、付け直そうとしたところバランスを崩して約100メートル滑落し、左大腿部などを負傷、同日午前11時30分頃、同行者が消防に通報し、救助要請 (※ 道警山岳遭難救助隊が遭難者を救助)
