The cottages at the Yama-no-Koryukan Tomura 山の交流館とむら are gorgeous, modern, well-built log cabins, sitting next to the Tomuraushi village post office/cafe. The cottages themselves are not in the mountains, but they're well located as a budget self-catered option for hikers, backcountry skiers, and bike-packers seeking accommodation relatively close to easter trailheads into the Daisetsuzan National Park. The cafe next door serves delicious light meals with local ingredients including local venison. They sleep 6 people, and at around 15,000yen per night per cottage, they're best split between a group.

Location

The Yama-no-Koryukan Tomura cottages are located right next to the Tomuraushi settlement post office/store トムラウシ郵便局, here, about half way between central Shikaoi Town 鹿追町 and Tomuraushi Onsen トムラウシ温泉.

General notes

These two-story cottages are no huts per se, but they are an excellent budget option for a large group seeking accommodation for big forays into the Daisetsuzan Range from the east side. Budget in the sense that each cottage sleeps six people, so if you’ve got six people it’s 2,750yen per night (16,500yen per cottage). Note that having six people in a cottage would be OK for one night, it might feel a bit cramped if staying longer than just one night. The cottages are fully kitted out with bath and shower (endless supply of gas-heated instant hot water), full kitchen including cutlery, pots, gas burner etc. Bring a box of food, and it’s self-catering heaven. There’s no restaurants in the village, but the post office does offer basic light meals during the day.

  • Closest onsen: Tomuraushi village is equidistant from Tomuraushi Onsen トムラウシ温泉 (location, 600yen, 12pm-8pm) to the north, and Osoushi Onsen オソウシ温泉 (location, 600yen, 10am-8pm) to the south; they’re both a 20 minute drive away. If you had to choose one or the other, we’d recommend Tomuraushi Onsen, but if you’re headed down towards Shikaoi Town, Osoushi Onsen is also nice.

Booking

It’s best to book in advance, as the staff require time to clean and prepare the cottages for visitors. That said, we showed up unannounced at just before 5pm on a Saturday night, and they were still happy to set one up for us at short notice. They asked for an hour to get a cottage ready, so we used the time to head up to Tomuraushi Onsen for a soak. It’s also possible to book online: https://reserva.be/kamuimintara2000

Hut Fees

The base price for each cottage is 13,200yen per night, regardless of how many people stay. There’s a 1000yen per night heating surcharge in winter. There’s also a 1,000yen surcharge for stays on nights before public holidays. So that’s about 2,500-2,750yen per night if splitting the cost between six people in winter.

Facilities

Heating: The cottages are really well insulated, so even cooking using the gas stove will heat up the ground floor nicely. There’s also a large external-vented kerosene heater, with kerosene provided.

Water: The cottages are connected to the village potable water mains.

Kitchen/cooking: There’s a full kitchen with a normal two-hob gas cooker. Pots, pans, cups, cutlery etc are provided. Guests can also use the nearby BBQ house – BYO charcoal.

Bedding: There’s full futon bedding for six people. Sleeping quarters are on the second floor. It’s just one large room, with everyone sleeping on the floor.

Elecricity: Full mains electricity.

Toilets: One clean, flush toilet with heated seat and bidet.

Cell reception: Tomuraushi Village has good cellphone reception.

Hutkeeper

The managers (a mother/daughter team) life in the village, and were very accommodating to our last-minute request to stay. They also manage the post-office/cafe next door.

  1. thanks for the info!
BTW, do u know any cottage/house/ or any type of accommodation within reasonable price range like this in Niseko, Rusutsu area?

Tried BnB booking.com etc, houses cost way above 20k per night which would be out of our cost. (thinking for 4~6persons)

    1. Hi Dalai, there’s nothing I know of in this price range in the Niseko/Rusutsu area, especially for stand-alone cabins, unfortunately. It’s a fairly high-demand area! Good luck!
