Hokkaido Wilds Attribution Guide

(日本語は下)All content on the Hokkaido Wilds, unless stated otherwise, is now licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. You can read an easy to understand description of that here (Japanese here). What that means for us, is that you’re welcome to use/remix/adapt content  on our website (i.e. do anything you want to it) for any purpose, including commercial use, so long as you credit the author, and share any modifications under the same terms. So, how should you share and attribute? Here’s a guide.

Say you’re someone with a passion for writing or editing guidebooks, and you want to put together and sell a printed guidebook of hikes and/or ski tour routes in Hokkaido. Or perhaps you know of a great way to adapt and sell our PDF overviews/maps of routes as printed versions using waterproof paper (please someone do this!). You might even be a tour operator, guide, or hotel that wants to use our photos on your website, or perhaps even post or distribute adapted route overview PDFs or route information for your clients to use.

First, you’re welcome. Go ahead. You’re completely free to do so, so long as you A) credit the author of the content and hokkaidowilds.org and B) make your adaptations available under the same or similar license (i.e., allow others to adapt or build upon your adaptations). Here’s how you might want to credit us and the author(s) of content you use. This will cover most situations, although it’s long – edit it to make sense for your project.

This work, <title of your adaptation>, is a derivative of <title of hokkaidowilds.org content> by <author> (hokkaidowilds.org), licensed under CC BY-SA. <title of your adaptation> is licensed under CC BY-SA by <your name>.

Example 1 – Ski guide

You’re a ski guide and you’ve created a branded flyer (or web page) for a paid, guided ski tour trip up Mt. Mekunnai using parts of our descriptive text, photos, and/or maps from our Mt. Mekunnai ski tour route page.

  • If appropriate, replace <title of your adaptation> with the title of your work. E.g., “Mt. Mekunnai Pow Fest Half-day Tour”
  • Replace <title of hokkaidowilds.org content> with “Mt. Mekunnai”.
  • Replace <author> with “Rob Thomson”.
  • Final attribution text, included as fine-print on the flyer (or web page) somewhere, might look something like this: “This flyer for our Mt. Mekunnai Pow Fest Half-day Tour uses photos, text, and maps from ‘Mt. Mekunnai‘ by Rob Thomson (hokkaidowilds.org), licensed under CC BY-SA. This flyer is licensed under the same terms (CC BY-SA by Niseko Pow Tours).”

Example 2 – Print-and-sell

Say you’re a cafe in Higashikawa, at the base of Asahidake, and you think that your hiking customers might want to buy printed copies of our Asahidake to Kurodake Traverse Hike 1:25000 hiking map (coming very soon). In this case, you can just print them out (or get a printer to) and sell them at what ever price you want to! Why? Because the author and ‘hokkaidowilds.org’ is already plastered all over the PDF. If you modify the maps or content in any way before printing them though (such as adding your logo, for example), then you’ll need to follow a similar attribution process as Example 1.

Example 3 – Pay for access website

Say you’re a tech-wizard, and you want to clone the entire Hokkaido Wilds website and add a paywall (or ads) so that people have to pay to access the content, or see ads along with the content. That’s just fine. The CC BY-SA license covers that, so you’re good to go. You’ll need to attribute as per the BY-SA license terms, and allow others to clone your website too, if they wanted to though. The original hokkaidowilds.org will always be free and ad-free though…

Caveats

  1. If a photo you want to use from the hokkaidowilds.org website has someone’s face clearly (and ‘identifiably’) visible, please contact us (rob@hokkaidowilds.org) so that we can confirm whether or not that person is OK with you using the picture. We don’t get any kind of release form from individuals in our photos, so keep that in mind.

This work, <title of your adaptation>, is a derivative of <title of hokkaidowilds.org content> by <author> (hokkaidowilds.org), licensed under CC BY-SA. <title of your adaptation> is licensed under CC BY-SA by <your name>.

Mt. Mekunnai Pow-Fest Half-day Tour”
